Minnesota Real Estate Broker License Requirements

Please note:
We are no longer selling Minnesota Salesperson Pre-License courses. Customers who currently have the courses in their account must complete them by 9/30/2024.

If you have been licensed for 3 years as a Minnesota real estate salesperson (or the same amount of experience in another state with comparable requirements) within the prior 5 years, you may qualify to earn your real estate broker’s license education requirements completely online. Please review the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s website to find out if you are eligible for a Minnesota broker real estate license and for more specific information on licensing requirements.

Our approved 30-hour online Minnesota Broker Pre-license Course will fulfill your broker pre-license education requirements, and prepare you for the Minnesota broker’s exam.

The course is also approved for 30 continuing education credit-hours towards a current Minnesota Salesperson real estate license. Review Statute 82.61 for more information about continuing education requirements.

Before you begin the course, contact the Minnesota Department of Commerce with questions about how this course may apply towards your continuing education requirements. (Please Note: The Broker Pre-License course does NOT satisfy any required module course requirements.)

Our Minnesota broker pre-license course is approved by the Association of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO), and by the Minnesota Department of Commerce

Before you get started, review our Minnesota Broker Pre-License Study Guide to help you get the most out of your online education experience.

2. Complete the broker course, and pass the course final exam with a proctor

The course offers text instruction on both the National (Uniform) and Minnesota (State) portions of the licensing exam. There is commentary by the instructor, graphs and diagrams, exercises, and quizzes to help you master the material. You will have the opportunity to go back and review each section separately, and contact your instructor if you have questions.

Minnesota requires you to take the course final exam for pre-license online courses under the supervision of a proctor. After you pass the online final exam with your proctor, we will issue you the course completion certificate. The course completion certificate MUST be presented at the testing center to take the state license exam. If you have your exam proctored with Continuing Ed Express, we will email your completion certificate the next business day from when you take your exam. If you have your exam proctored at another location, we will issue the completion certificate once we receive the completed valid proctor affidavit. Please keep these timeframes in mind as you prepare to schedule your license exam.

Complete details for the proctoring requirements and process are included within the online course. Click here to review the proctor details in advance.

3. Take the optional MN License Exam Prep course

Although everything you'll need to know for the state license exams is in the Minnesota Broker Pre-License Course, we highly recommend our optional Exam Prep Course. The license exams are VERY difficult, and the Exam Prep course will reinforce, and help you remember, key principles you might find on both the uniform and state-specific pre-license exams. You’ll also receive exam-taking tips, and get lots of practice with sample questions to help you prepare for the challenging license exams.

4. Pass the licensing exam

After you pass the broker course final exam, your proctor will provide an affidavit to us, and we will email you a PDF copy of your completion certificate, which you'll need to bring to the PSI testing site in order to take the state's broker license exam.

You will take a two-part licensing exam: one part for general real estate principles, and one part for Minnesota-specific laws and practices. You can take both parts at the same session, or at separate times. If you do not pass one of them, you have to wait until the next business day to schedule a retake. Visit PSI if you are interested in purchasing their practice broker test before scheduling the license exams.

For directions to testing centers, information about making an appointment, and detailed information about the license exam, visit PSI.

5. Apply for your real estate broker license

After receiving the completion certificate for the 30-hour pre-license course, and passing the Minnesota state licensing exams, you may apply for your Minnesota Real Estate Broker license. Go to the Minnesota Department of Commerce's website for details on the application process and fee.

Application Deadline: According to Minnesota Statute 82.58 Subd. (3), "After successful completion of the real estate broker's examination, an individual shall have one year from the date of the examination to apply for a broker's license, unless the individual is a salesperson who remains continuously active in the real estate field as a licensee."

One extra step...

Go to the Minnesota Department of Commerce website to find out if you are eligible for a real estate license and for more specific information on licensing requirements.
